Is a BSS suitable for steel shot?

As long as the chokes are modified or less, I don't think twice about using it in mine. Started shooting steel in the BSS at least 15 years ago. Never a sign of a problem. I use a softer non-tox in the full-choked barrel though. This past season I used Win. Xpert steel in the right and Classic Doubles Hevi-Shot or Bismuth in the left. Three inchers. Heckuva duck gun, IMO.

Altho I don't know for sure, I suspect the Browning lawyers would say "No". That being said, I continue to try to find someone who can say that he/she has seen with his own eyes a moderately-choked gun that has been ruined with steel shot size 5 or smaller

If you go to the Browning website, you will find that they recommend not to use steel shot in any of their Belgian guns. They don't say anything about their Japanese-made guns. As Stan says, probably not a good idea to shoot it through a very tight choke.

I'm curious as to why the barrels for a 1985 Browning BPS are marked steel safe? Wouldn't Miroku source the tubes for both doubles and singles from the same place, if they are not making them themselves? Or are single barrels wall that much thicker?

Typically, yes, they are thicker. Especially so in screw choke applications.

Anyone that has spent much time around the BSS guns will note that they are heavy. Much of that weight comes from the especially thick barrel walls, all the way out to the muzzle. my 20g guns seem to be in the .045 range with places around .050". Given that they are modern chromoly alloy steel, I would say they are as qualified to handle steel shot or not as any gun commonly used to shoot steel shot. JMO.

The 12 ga. BSS is one of the best candidates in a modern sxs for Briley thinwall choke tubes. Very versatile fowler/clays/turkey gun so equipped. Steel shot; just screw in an i.c and mod. set and go. JR

Steel shot users should note that Briley offers a steel shot compatable installation. I think I owned a gun with these for about 3 days. The threaded area of the choke was about twice the length of regular lead chokes.

I think I owned a gun with these for about 3 days. Why the short stint with that one? Any issues with the chokes? I have used my BSS 20 with steel shot. Chokes had been opened a bit to LM/IM before I bought it. Great little gun.
