Hello Gents,

I ran across this curious Basque "5 locking lug" action and am wondering if anyone here is familiar with the history of such an invention. Is this English, Continental, Spanish, Italian? Who designed it? Has it been used elsewhere?

The manufacturer of this gun is "Hijos de Juan Bautista Arrizabalaga." This particular example was made in the early 50's, but I am told that there are examples that go back to 20s or before.

Thanks in advance,

David

David, I've never seen one quite like that before. But going back to the pre-WWII years in particular, the Germans were the ones that loved multiple bolts. The Spanish, for the most part, copied British actions--although AyA made some pretty decent Merkel OU clones. And I once owned a more modern AyA that was a copy of a pretty high grade Sauer boxlock--even marked "AyA-Sauer". But my guess would be, if it isn't something the Spanish came up with on their own--and they're mostly good copiers, not innovators--it probably came from a German design.

1944 was the last year of operation of Hijos de Juan Bautista Arrizabalaga. Production of Arrizabalaga Guns was taken over by Pedro Arrizabalaga.

Thanks John. That dates the gun to pre- 1944.

Chuck, have you ever seen such a design on a double rifle?

Appears to have double underbolts & then the two, one on either side of the breech. What is the 5th bolt. Can't make out the breech face very well in the picture, does it have something similar to the Purdey hidden bolt there?

Miller,

Yes, the action has a double underlugs, a hidden third fastener on the standing breech, and then a double on each side where you would normally find sideclips.

What I am thinking is that the top mechanism in the standing breech works similar to a Greener crossbolt only it not only engages the barrels in the center, but also on each end in lieu of just being a sliding pin.
