Guys-

Have a nice, brand new muzzleloader shotgun that I won at an fund rasing event and would like to use for turkey season this year. Anyone have a load and wad recommendation?

The muzzleloader fires a 209 primer and was manufactured in the last five years. I.E. modern and safe so no old gun concerns..

Thanks!

Don't forget an over powder card/wad and an over shot card as well.

Don't forget the 1 1/16 over powder wad, the 1/2" or two, felt main wad, the 1/16th undershot wad and the 1/8th overshot wad. Or say heck with it and use a WAA12 plastic wad, 1/8th card wad over that to stop the pellets falling out.
Or balled up newsprint. This is not rocket science

Using a plastic wad will cause a problem as I have found out. As well as giving higher pressures, the black powder severely burns the plastic and leaves a plastic residue in the barrel.

Most of the blackpowder shooters I know and shoot with load a hard card over the powder and some put about a 1/4" felt wad on top of that. Then the shot is poured in and a thin card put on top. Circle Fly is a source of all the wads you need. Plastic wads do make a mess with blackpowder's heat. If you want to try concentrating the shot experiment with heavy paper wrap on top of the fiber wad surrounding the shot like a plastic shot cup.

Like everyone, there is always an opinion. For turkey, since I want a tight pattern out of my cylinder bores. I use no cushion at all. Otherwise for all other shooting I use a 1/4" thick fiber cushion, lubed with olive oil. For the one shot at turkey, the no cushion will tighten up the pattern. I use only an over powder card and an over shot card. I am not a scientist, but it seems without any restriction choke, there is nothing to slow up the shot cups and get them out of the shot stream. With a shot cup I get unreliable patterns, some shots are a slug all the way to the target and some shots will pattern ok.

Right, I forgot about black powder melting plastic, it sure does burn hot. I had a problem getting the goo out of my barrels after using Black Powder and plastic wads. Carburetter cleaner dissolved the plastic, but use it ourdoors, that stuff is pungent. Also good for getting plastic wad buildup from the Tula chokes in my MX8 skeet gun.
