Im going to look at a 1953 jp sauer and the owner doesn't seem to know much about the firearm. All he could tell me was that his father bought the gun in 1953 for $450.00 and that he acquired the gun in 1977. He said that the firearm was used very little and looks like new. The question I have is, does jp sauer have a quality or grade system? If they do could anyone fill me in.

$450 U.S. of A. is quite a sum in the 1950s. Pics will garner you some info here. Post WWII Sauers
aren't as closely followed or collected. Probably Simson tubes of IZH 50A steel.

Mostly very nice shotguns by my estimation. I love the prewar ones. Not so much the post WWII guns

I would look at the date code on the underside of the barrels. Also I would ask if the gum has been shot. Interestingly, 2 3/4 inch shells fit in 2 1/2 16 ga chambers. I have 2 drillings that are off face due to the prior owner shooting 2 3/4 inch shells in the 2 1/2 inch chambers. It is rather expensive to fix a drilling that is off face.

Well I went to see the Sauer on the weekend. It was as he described on the phone with a few small details being wrong. It turns out it was made 09/54 not 53, but the gun looks like new and has a single triger with selector. It also has cocking indicator and beavertail forstock. It never left my hands. I will try to post some pics soon.

Looks like the head of the stock has been pinned. Any images of the right side of the stock? Maybe there was an inletting issue/compromising of wood with the single trigger that led to the head of the stock cracking?

Not at all what I expected to see. The cost can be explained by matted flat rib, long btfe, sst, and barrels plus stock designed against extra charge from 1&1/4 oz shot-shells with Vo >1200fps. These usually scale close to 8lb. It's not something ones sees on daily basis. Thanks for sharing.
