I am sure that one of you will be able to help ... Is there a book showing Winchester checkering patterns? ... including the single shot rifle. I don't recall if this is an insert in another book or its own separate book. Any help is appreciated. Thank you ...

There are a lot of books on Winchesters rifles that show the old Winchester patterns.
Order this catalog from Doug Turnbull for $10.00.

I have a reprint of an 1897 "Winchester Highly Finished Arms" catalog that has been my bible for original checkering and engraving patterns for decades. On the back cover is simply says, "Reprinted 1970", and I have no idea how to replace it.

The reprint that Turnbull sells for ten bucks is the one that Stephen describes.

One of the best sources is online auction catalogs from the big gun auction houses like James Julia. Most companies have archived catalogs with numerous good photos of origninal Winchester checkering and engraving patterns.

Not quite; Mine is a reprint of the original, Turnbull's looks to have his work as well and might be vastly preferable for those wanting to see recreations of factory work in photography rather than etchings.
I wish I had know about the Turnbul publication, I'd have had them send a copy with the Color Case hardening on its way back!

The book Steven is talking about, is available from Cornell Publications, listed under; catalog; Winchester 1897 & is listed for $9.95. I don't think it shows any single shots.

Turnbull does great work. His Winchester highly finished arms catalog is a great reference. However, there are subtle differences between genuine Winchester checkering and that done by Turnbull. The most obvious difference is Turnbull's borders and proportions of the diamonds. If you carefully study genuine Winchester factory work you will see the differences.

Joe,

What pattern are you looking for? I may have photos of what you need.
