I purchased recently H Clark & Sons 16ga shotgun from Tod Scott. I am having trouble to find any reference to this gun maker. I am still waiting for the gun but judging from the picture it is decent looking gun. I would appreciate any information about this gun maker and guns he produced. Thank you in advance.

Thanks. I was refered to Boothroyds directory on British gunmakers.According to seller this gun maker was in business from 1832-1963 and located in Birmingham. Problem is I can not find this book anywhere. I will keep looking.

I checked IGC data base, they have 3 pages of Clark and Clarke. I printed out the Leicester data, they were in business from 1832 until 1955. If you want a copy I can e-mail it to you.

According to limited information I got from the seller Henry Clark & Sons were located in Birmingham. He read it for me from Boothroyds directory on British gunmakers. I made quick notes but it was only location and time frame of operation. He stated that hey were using Webley receivers as most of the gun maker of his division and era. He has another gun with full engraving and suposedly high quality grade. It is over $4,000 and that is out of my reach right now. Thanks.

Kosinar - researching old guns is much fun and usually leads to new learnings. The maker's name is one of the first questions usually asked about a gun and one of the least useful pieces of information. As you can see, Mr. Clark, like most all Brit makers, made/supplied a range of Original Quality grade guns. Then as now, the selling price generally determined the quality grade of the gun. The maker's name determines Brand Value and has a 2X impact on market price, whereas Original Quality grade and Current Condition level each have a 20X impact on price. The maker's name will give you hints as to where the gun was likely to have been used and, to some extent, its dates. Enough is known about some makers to surmise whether they bought-in complete guns and then ran a service shop, bought-in "in the white" guns and finished them up, or bought-in parts at some level of finish and basically built the gun. Remember, the Brit gun industry was a "trade" and there was all manor of swapping of parts, material, and labor.
Good luck with your research!

Henry Clark, Gunmaker,Midland Gun Works,38 Gallowtree Gate & 20 Humberstone Gate, Leicester. Seen on his trade label, is an impressive four storey building, subdivided into a retail store and gun works.Mr Clarke claims to be a manufacturer of breech loading guns & revolvers, Hammerless Guns,Rook & Rabbit Rifles. Mr Clarke also states that he is patronised by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales. The adjacent "Bradgate Park", site of many"Big Shoots" in the Edwardian era makes this a plausible claim. Records show H.Clarke in business from 1832and by 1908 listed as Henry Clarke and Son . Business closed in 1963.
