I have been following the diatribe by Ed Good and his master torch man Ed Landers. Ed Good makes claims such as the one below pulled straight from one of his current auctions:

"CASE COLORS HAVE BEEN SAFELY RESTORED TO NEAR ORIGINAL BRIGHT APPEARANCE"

Here is the link to the Auction: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=246343764

As we all know these are know where near the "Original" Case Colors as this cannot be achieved with a torch.

Ed Good preys on unknowing and unsuspecting buyers that do not know the difference between true and proper color case hardening. They only find out later that they were ripped off when they try to sell the gun for what they paid for it or when they show up at a shoot to show off their newest find only to learn that their gun is forever ruined along with their pride.

These poor souls should have some legal recourse for his misrepresentation. If nothing else he should be banned from Gunbroker, GA, GI and from advertising on this forum for fraudulent practices. Perhaps if he loses his client base it will no longer be profitable for him or Mr. Torch Landers.

as to early parker case colors...it appears some of you don't much care for the results of an effort to duplicate them. perhaps some of you critics would like to refer us to an example of what you think are appropriate representations of late 19th century parker case colors?

My 1891 Parker DH has been abused in almost every way. Her Damascus barrels have been cut to 28", reamed big and chambers extended to 3". Parker overbuilt the barrels and, despite the abuse, they still have enough thickness through their length to be safe with low pressure loads. She has been restocked with a straight grip in place of her original pistol grip and a Silvers pad installed.

There is a tiny bit of color under the lever and a bit more, but not much, faded color on the forend iron. None of which resembles Mr. Ed's colors.

Thank goodness all of her previous owners have allowed her to "go grey" with class rather than tarting her up with with colors "SAFELY RESTORED TO NEAR ORIGINAL BRIGHT APPEARANCE".

the goal of the case coloring effort referenced in the beginning of this thread, was to attempt reproduce, as close as possible, the parker gh case colors as produced by the parker factory in the late 19th century. whether or not the effort was successful is difficult to determine, as there are so few parkers of that vintage that have enough bright case colors left to make an intelligent comparison. one did pass through my hands years ago, that one had about 50% original case color left, mostly on the top tang, lever and in hidden areas. doing a comparison from memory, this one was pretty close; bright with golds, blues. however, i do not recall any reds.

I've seen plenty of vintage Parkers with strong original case colors. You're looking in the wrong place apparently.
