I am looking at picking up a pre-war Marlin 90 O/U in 20g. It is in good condition for the price. But the gun wants to open sometimes when it is fired. Or at least that is what the seller says.
I am leaning towards it being a weak or worn top lever spring. The lever does not really want to snap back very well on closing. But it does return on its own. In a non-firing inspection, the gun seems very tight. And all is operable.
The price is right for the gun, even if it needs a repair, and I see that there are many parts available for the gun.
Just wondering if anyone else with more experience with this type of gun may have come accross the same problem.

Probably filthy inside. Model 90's are good guns. It's not locking as well as it should. Have it stripped and cleaned.
Out there doing it best I can.

Picked up this Marlin.
Did not take it out to shoot it first, but decided to get into it to see if there was anything clearly wrong. It was pretty clean inside, but once I removed the top lever, it was clear as to what the issue was. The slot that engages with the bolt actuating arm was worn and widened on both sides. This caused undue slop in the top lever, along with making the lever sit far left of center when closed. I hit the worn spots with some weld and re-filed the slot. Snug fit now. And also the top lever spring was worn out too. It broke when re-installing it. So I replaced that yesterday.
Just have to take it out now and shoot it to make sure all is well.
