I note in the Harrisonburg (VA) "Daily News-Record" that two different auctions will occur simultaneously this Saturday morning about 10 miles apart in Shenandoah County, VA (about 75 miles SW of the DC beltway on I81). Both look interesting to double gunners. The first, Laughlin Auctions in Edinburg, VA, advetises LC's, Foxes, Lefevers, Sauers, and others and notes a "special offering" of a "rare L.C. Smith hammerless 8 ga with quality 4 engraving with quail and bird dogs, fine checkering with 32 in damascus barrels." A second auction will be at the Shenandoah County Fairgrounds in Woodstock. It advertises over 160 guns including Brownings, Foxes, Parkers, etc. I haven't seen any of these guns and I am not attending the auctions, and I am not associated with them in any way. Just giving a heads up. The first auction's list is accessible at laughlinauctions.com, the second (I think) at vagunandknifeshows.com If you buy as a result of this tip, you need to pay Dave. mike

Wow - is that 8g original or worked over??

I think Julia's has 1 or 2 8g LCs coming up next week.

I went to the Laughlin website. That 8 ga looks pretty good. They claim it is one of only two known grade 4 8-guages. It will likely go pretty high. mike

I would be very unhappy if I were one of the consignors to that auction and found the website to be devoid of pictures or any pertinent information about the guns.

Well, two very spirited bidders went toe to toe; and when the gavel dropped, the old No 4 LC 8-bore went for $40K, plus the 5% VA sales tax, for a total of $42K.

Wow that makes the 8 gauge Quality 2 Sheels had for sale a few years ago look like a real bargain at their asking price of $8,000.00.

I was at the auction, made the trip to see and handle the gun in case it got buried in a collection for fifty years. It was the closest thing to an eight gauge bird gun. It was truly the greatest American shotgun I have seen in years, maybe ever. Yup, it sold for forty extra large and it was contested to almost that point by at least three phone bidders. I called the successful bidder, a good friend, after the auction to congratulate.
