I HAVE GOTTEN THE RUST-O-LEUM PAINT OFF THE BARRELS OF THIS BEATIUL U.K. SIDE x SIDE. THE PROOF MARKS PLACE IT BETWEEN 1855 - 1875. MY "UNKNOWNS ARE" 1. BOTTOM OF BARRELS STAMPED...M&M K C.h 2. Who is R.S. Mortimer? that is stamped on both side cover plates. 3. Any idea of the value of this thing? tHANK YOU FOR ANY LEADS ON WHERE TO LOOK AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME... KURT

I find, among the dozens of Mortimers in the book, The Mortimer Gunmakers 1753-1923, only a Robert Mortimer. The book does not associate him in the period you say the gun is from, but rather he was writing a family history as late as 1930. Let us see a picture of the gun and proofs. If you cannot post pictures, I would be glad to do it for you. darylh@theglobal.net

TRACKSGUNSMIHING, Records show that in the city of Barnstaple, U.K. there was at at some date date a gunsmith/dealer or ironmonger[hadware store] that traded under the name Mortimer.Examples of cartridges marked "Mortimer,Barnstaple,The Club,"exist.Could this be the mysterious R.S.Mortimer? Or is this is just another Belgian gun bearing a spurious name? Perhaps barrel browner [At one time a frequent poster on this forum who resides in Barnstaple] could help because I am aware that he is working on a reference book related to the gunmakers/smiths that have carried out business in Barnstaple in the past?

Hi Roy, R.S.Mortimer is a new one on me for here, I have been struggling for info re Barnstaple gunmakers, I managed to contact a member of the Gale family but it turned out they never kept any files of the guns which was such a shame as they were the main gunmakers here ,I will have a root through some of the local records to see what I can find.

THE BARREL IS BEAUTIFUL, THE PAINT WAS DONE BY HIS GRANDFATHER WITH A BRUSH AND RUST-O-LEUM PAINT.. I BEAD BLASTED IT AND RE-HOT-BLUED THE BARRELS, FROM ALL THE PICS I HAVE SEEN THE BARRELS WERE BLUED AND THE BREECH IS CLEAR STEEL

Hot blued the barrels? Yikes! You obviously know what you are doing. Upload pics, there is an icon at the top of the full screen reply...put the link in there when the popup comes up.

I've never heard of a gun from 1875 or earlier with fluid steel barrels that you could hot blue. I fear your good intentions may have ruined the gun more than the paint.
We need pictures please.
