Over the years many here have discussed what constitutes "good engraving".

This is only my opinon; if you want to see an example of what really fine foliate scroll engraving looks like, both in execution and composition, look at the work of Keith Thomas in the latest issue of Sporting Shot-just breathtaking.

I have no dog in this fight, just wanted to share. Happy Thanksgiving all.

You are correct, very nice engraving. On the one showing a woodcock, not bad, at least no flying turnups.

The article by Tom Roster should get a lot of attention.

I've handled several guns engraved by Mr. Thomas. Overall I like his work very much. That said I have found some his work to look a little "busy" to my eyes. But that could be the result of what the customer wanted though.

As for Roster's article, that's about the 3rd or 4th article I've seen from him advocating the use of steel shot.
Which leads me to wonder just what kind of shotguns does Mr. Roster shoot?

I am interested in what others think of that Roster article. Be nice if someone would start a separate thread for that.

Given the time and dedication to arrive at his level of skill, I am most appreciative of his work. I am the same with the really good wildlife artists, and yet I can be SO PICKY about what I like and what is good enough for me to collect it. Steve
