I'm familiar with European shotguns, but unfamiliar with American shotguns. Question: what is the function of the stud on the action flat of this gun (just in front of the breech face)? Thanks, Nigel

Nigel--That "stud" releases the toplever when you close the gun! The barrel flats push that stud down and the bolt engages the barrels at the rear and the lever snaps to center.

Bill, eight bore, Thanks for the information. There are no underbarrel lumps with chamfered surfaces to push back Purdey underbolts and otherwise act on the crossbolt, so I can see how the 'trip' is necessary.
The gun was loaned to me recently. As far as I can see it is a 1926 12-bore NID, grade 4 (engraved duck on left side plate, pheasant on right and snipe under the action) with grade 7 checkering.
By English standards that is a heavy gun, at 9lbs exactly. More the weight we would expect from a 10-bore. It's an impressive beast!

Hello Nigel,
Curious to know how long the barrels are on the NID. At 9lbs, that's pretty heavy by US standards too and I'm guessing a well-heeled duck/goose hunter ordered this one up back in the day...
Regards,
jmc

jmc, Barrel are 32", heavy, with a vented rib. What kind of $$ value would you put on this? Nigel.

Nice fowler. Any idea how it found itself on the other side of the pond?

Hi GLS,
No idea how it got here, but I may be seeing it's owner tomorrow, and I'll ask him. The gun is w-a-a-a-y too big for me. LOP is about half a mile (or so it feels!) Actually it's 15-1/4" but it feels huge, particularly when combined with all that weight out front.
Nigel.
