Is it unusual for a 2.5" chambered gun to be proofed for 1.25oz?

The Brits had different proof marks for the same information over the decades. I can't keep track of them. When a gun had the chamber lengthened from 2-1/2" to 2-3/4" it would be required to be reproofed. The 2-1/2" proof mark would remain but the new mark might say "1-1/4 oz" or 4Tons etc...
But yes, 1-1/4 oz proof would be for 2-3/4" chambers.
Best,
Mike

I've had a few 2 1/2" chambered guns, ( British), that had the 1 1/4 oz mark. And yes I did measure the chambers.

I should have written:
"But yes, 1-1/4 oz proof would be for 2-3/4" British cartridges."

My understanding is that the standard proofing for 2 1/2" cartridges was for 1 1/8 oz. of shot but the submitter could specify a heavier proof. ie. 1 1/4 oz. Like Mike I have seen this on a few guns, particularly Greeners.
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought stupid, than open it and confirm.

Terry and Gunman are correct. I've had three Greeners with 2.5" chambers, proofed for 1 1/4 oz of shot. These were 12 bores.

I've seen a few Charles Lancaster best sidelocks circa 1890s proofed 2.5", 1-1/4 ounce shot.

It was an old loaders trick to leave a little powder out and put a bit more shot in .Esspesialy for driven game . Dont also foget folks we are talking of time of felt/fiber wads and roll turn over cases. Thus the length of a loaded unfired cartridge could be longer than that of a modern crimped case.Still haveing the same case length when fired ,allowing room for the extra shot .
