I'm in the process of bringing both an Ithaca Crass and a Lewis model back to life, and I had a question.
Were the screws and trigger guards of that era rust blued or browned?
Barrels on both are still nicely browned, so I'm not going to to anything to them.

I agree with Stallones on the black and white. I have a Crass Grade 5 with original black and white. Also, I am sure that the trigger guards were not rust blued like barrels. The original bluing has much more lustre than rust blue. Maybe it was carbona or similar.

Chuck, are you saying that your Crass originally had charcoal blued triggerguard etc, or that in the restored condition, it now has the charcoal blue ?

Daryl,
I don't know what the orig was, just the current restored condition. It's a dark high gloss black finish, I thought was a charcoal blue.

Chuck, the original finish is not a hot blue [traditional] or a rust blue like on barrels. Here're a couple of pics of the deep vibrant, high lustre blue I am talking about . Maybe top lever shows it best as it's hard to see with the engraving.

Daryl is right, those parts are nitre or Carbona type processes.
