I have a new project that for the time being Ill call Project Sows Ear. Its a 1970 or 1980s vintage Brazilian made Rossi Squire .410. If one were to look up ugly in the dictionary, hed probably find a picture of this gun. As a project gun Ive already changed the stock from a POW grip to an English grip, I plan to resculpt the beaver tail forend while still keeping it a beavertail, just a much sleeker beaver tail. Right now, and the reason for this thread, is Im trying to figure out how it had been blued. The barrels almost look like some type of stainless steel offshoot, and what little is left of the former bluing looks as if it was painted on. Does anyone have any experience bluing the barrels on these things? I cant say for certain, but it looks as if the ribs might be brazed or silver soldered. Using an icepick point Ive scrapped down into the crack between the rib and the barrels, but dont see any tell-tale copper that says brazed. Id just as soon hot blue it if theyve been brazed.
Thanks for any help yall can give me on this project.

Original POW stock

Resculpted English stock

Topside of barrels, this is how I got the gun. Yes that's a coin finish on the frame, it should make a handy mirror if I need to do some grooming while out in the field.

Underside of barrels with remainder of bluing (or paint?)

Hey jOe, you old rattlesnake! Welcome back, it's been awhile. Hey, isn't it refreshing to look in the dictionary under ugly and not see your own picture for a change laugh

Rock, you are on the right track with the stock...it looks great!
The metal work will be a test though!

That's actually a pretty nice piece of wood they hid under whatever finish they slapped on it. I think with the English stock it'll be a lot nicer-handling. No clue on the barrels, though. You sure they didn't make them out of old Coke cans? eek

jOe - how many turkeys so far?

I caught the .410 fever back around 2002 when I was training my dog and got bored with gunning down pen-raised poultry with my 12 gauge.
I'm not sure if I'll ever get this little .410 to be anything but an eye-sore, but I'm trying! I can resculpt the wood eaily enough (everything's so thick and clunky, resculptings easy) but it has an ugly stainless steel frame with a coin finish. I don't know what to do with that other than just live with it. Maybe eventually that coin finish will grow on me, like a wart!
Steve

Probably the reason you're not getting many responses Steve is everyone thinks you should just leave it alone. Just make a clean wall hanger out of it or a parts gun.

I wouldn't trust it. frown

Rossis are perfectly safe, just not pretty.Seems like you could sand a spot along the edge of the bottom rib and see how they are attached?
