I recently aquired a J P Sauer Model XVII in 12 gage. There was a posting on this site a very short while back that had a diagram of the extra screws in the frame and the sear layout on the guns with "intercepting sears" which of course my gun has, to put in the Sauer catalog I have of that vintage. Also, one of the posts on that thread indicated frame markings on the water table by the serial number of FW and TW. Mine has AW in this location. What is the significance of these marks, the engraver? Also a neat discovery when I took the buttplate off(horn) to repair the worm holes, I discovered the serial number on the wood, the buttplate, and the name A Englemann written in the same silver colored wax pencil. I assume he was the final assembler maybe? Any thoughts anybody? Regards Lee.

I would venture a guess that mechanic A. Englemann was a stocker. Don't know of him right off. F.B., W.B., A.W. and possibly a few more sets are found on the upper rung offerings of Sauer and those mechanics were either the actioner, action filer or frame filer. If we could assume that A.W., F.W., T.W. were all of the same family and all of Suhl it would make unknowns a bit simpler. August Wagner was listed as a tube maker while Fritz Wagner was listed in Suhl. I don't think August Wagner would be doing any frame filing. August Bräutigam was a frame filer from Merkel and could have been sourced by other makers. Sticking to Suhl there was August Weiß and possibly an Alfred Werner depending on when he was active. There is a long tradition of gunmaking by the Werner family in Suhl.

Kind Regards,

Raimey
