I made a impulse purchase in a pawn shop a couple of days ago while picking up a gun I bought off gunbroker. The impulse purchase is a 20 ga Ithaca 600 made by SKB., 3 inch chambers and fixed chokes, that as best I can tell are IC but I can't find any markings. Barrels are 28 inch.
My question is about refinishing the thing. It's very tight and the bores are nice but the blueing is shot. Some idiot had stored it wet or spilled something caustic on it and then cleaned the mess up with steelwool. It's not rusty or pitted, just looks like the blueing has been removed in a big area.
And the stock seems to have been cut down to fit a small person. But that works out good because it will be for the wife who is not very big.
So my question is, should it be refinished or just kept clean and oiled? It's obviously not a collector of any sort but should be a real nice shooter. So far I've only got $405.00, tax an all, in it so I'm wondering if doing the work will enhance or not? And how much should it cost to have a passable blue job done on it?
