A&W is Anson & Webley.

It is shorthand for an Anson & Deeley action with a Webley & Brain screw grip.

These were made by Webley & Scott for Lancaster.

hello dave,
the a and w special is a range of boxlock guns made by webley and scott.they can be seen in webley catalogues circa 1900.....1930. as dig said earlier it is anson and webley and the range included special, ist special, 51 and 52 amongst others, all the same screw grip action but varying spec.
the actions were also sold in the trade to lancaster, army and navy, william evans etc to use on their guns.
i have always liked guns with this action as i find them pleasing to the eye (webley horseshoe lever, webley fences and of course the "screw")and they are always very reliable.simplistic and pretty.

cheers
mrwmartin

Mr. W. - thanks very much for your input. I agree with you that this box-lock has wonderful lines and a very stout action to boot. All the best!
Dave
