I'm cross posting this, because I'm not getting much responce.
I just loaded up 50 rounds on my Grabber, 16 gauge loads.
Winchester Super X hull, trimmed to 2-9/16"
Win. 209 primer
75 grains by Volume of 2F Pyrodex, used the #46 bushing
One 1/8" nitro card
One 3/8" Fiber wad
1 oz. #8 lead shot
6 point crimps.

I found a known tested load very close to this, except they used
regular 3F black powder. It tested out at 1200 FPS @ 5000 PSI.
Care to guess how the 2F Pyrodex will compare to the 3F BP.
Thanks, Dave Miles

I am guessing much slower. I have had SLOOOW results and quit using it although i dont have any velocities statistics. I see no advantage to using pyrodex

I only use black powder so I'm not sure of any difference between 2F BP and 2F Pyrodex, but I have seen as much as 200fps difference between 2F and 3F BP using the same load.

Have you checked the maker's web site for some comparable data?

16ga is prolly gunna be hard to find exact data examples for, you might be best served by looking for 12ga data comparisons
and "extrapolating" (?1)

Published BP data is not very common or extensive..the subs seem to at least have some info to go on though, still not much.

Best,
Mark

I would be interested to see some bp loadings. I am going to campaign my Evans 16 bore and having short chambers, I'm concerned with making a reasonable load for wild pheasants over flushing dogs. Bought a bag of #5 and I'm thinking a beginning load of about 75 gr of Swiss 1.5 or 3fg and 1 oz of lead would be good. I would be roll crimping. Does that seem reasonable?

Dave, do you lube your fiber wads?

Brent

Dave, Hodgdon's 2004 manual contains a Pyrodex recipe for a one-ounce 16 ga 2.75" load, as follows: unspecified hull and primer, 90 gr. Pyrodex, card & filler. 1128 fps, 5600 LUP. So, I'm thinking 75 gr. will be too slow for effective shooting with shot smaller than #5.

Hodgdon also advise against the use of powder measures designed for smokeless powders.

Brent, Hodgdon recommends 80 gr. Pyrodex, card & filler, and 1.25 oz of shot. Yields 1040 fps, 6000 LUP. Tom Roster says 1050 fps is plenty for #5 shot. Bottom line, I think your load should work well.

I don't know where to find actual BP data, especially any using the BP available today. Even then, brands differ significantly in power. If I were doing this, I would load up a few rounds and use the old Dixie Gun Works tin can penetration test. DGW figured if you could penetrate a tin can, you had enough velocity to go hunting.

Sam Fadala has a BP loading book out, generally available in book stores like Barnes & Noble. Might be worth a read.

Brent,
I did not lube these fiber wads. I have some pre-lubed fiber wads that I was going to try in some brass hulls.
There is some pretty good info in this previous post:
