I have recently acquired this rifle. It has the "Schutzen stock but no fancy wood or metal engraving, it has an interesting tang sight. The gun shop was not sure of the caliber. They thought it might be a 9 x 72 however after measuring the diameter of the rim and doing some rough chamber and barrel measurements I believe it to be a 9.3 x 58R Koeffler. Does anybody out there have a cartridge or even an empty case or know where I get purchase some or get some further information for this rifle. Thanks

The traditional Schuetzen caliber is 8.15X46R. You might start with that as an assumption and work from there.

rctsat,
You mentioned rough chamber and barrel measurements, but didn't provide any. 9.5x47R was also a popular "Schutzen" cartridge in earlier times and may be found with the caliber marked as 9.3 or the gage equivalent( bore, not bullet dia.).The head dia. of this cartridge would be something over 1/2", and the 8.15x46R(mentioned by xausa) would have a head dia. less than1/2"( around .425-.427").The best way to determine the caliber is to make a chambercast.

Thanks for the info the caliber is definitely 9.3 or slightly greater and the rim is over .600 in inches don't know in millimeters. Any idea were I could get the dimensions for 9.5 x 47R although I think though this cartridge is way too short. It's much closer to 60mm than 47mm.

Have you made a cast, wax or Cerro-Safe? Those values will really narrow the field.

rctsat,
There are several cartridges based on the 11.15x60R(43 Mauser)case, which has the Mauser "A base" or "MB". This one has a rim dia.of .585-.595" and a head dia. of .510-.516". There are some cases even larger, but you described the rifle as a Schuetzen type, and they would be seldom, if ever, found in such a rifle. You didn't say,but your dascription seems German. If it is Swiss, there is an outside chance it could be based on the 10.3x60R Swiss case.To get a positive answer, you will need to mace or have made a chamber cast and measure it using dimensions to the nearest thousanths of an inch. you should also "slug" the barrel and post photos, including of the proofmarks, if any.
