That French gun-making video I posted the link to a while back has me wanting a carding wheel....and wishing I had the cajones to go at checkering like they do!

The cajones are obviously my problem.... so could someone please direct me to a part number at Brownell's(or other source) for an appropriate carding wheel?

Best,
Mark

Please someone tell me, what is "carding?" If it involves a wire wheel, why isn't it called something else? I have asked this question before but no one has answered. Thank you.

CARDING Is an old world term for brushing. Wool was brushed by hand to make thread and cloth.Today barrels are brushed or carded with a soft wire wheel. Similarly, a "file card" is a brush to clean the teeth of a file. HTH Bob

HIGH$TRAP,(Bob), is correct. Unfortunately many of the pseudo-enlightened, also use the term interchangeably with draw- filling a barrel and preping it for for rust blueing. Best, Dr. Bill

One can also card by hand, using degreased 4-0 steel wool. The wheel can get into nooks and crannies (I think that is a word) a little better than steel wool. Just be careful not to over do it with the wheel. Brownells also has them at about the same price.

Thank you for the explanation! I figured it was something like that. The name just didn't make sense.

775 Just another source for soft carding wheels. Most taxidermy and tanning supply companies carry carding wheels.
VanDykes come to mind. They use them to flesh hides, and the softer the wheel, the less tear they will get on birds and thin skinned critters. Randy

One thing that I don't see mentioned is that carding is used to take the rust coating (more like velvet)off during the rust bluing process. The reason for the fine wire brush is that this must be done with a light touch or the rust under this "velvet" will be removed also which removes the desired black oxide.

The initial process creates a red rust that turns black after boiling. At the stage of carding, it is still fairly easy to rub off the bluing at the corners of a piece.

Thought I might add a bit more detail. There is a lot that I left out but this should make it a bit clearer.
