775,
I didn't see the French gun-making video link. Could you re-post it here if it is still available.
Thanks

Trying to find needed soft carding wheel I found nothing. Finally I bought huge and wide hard carding wheel and made it soft with propane torch heating wires over critical point. Moreover I burned out all greese and oil in wheel.
Then I prepare wheel for 'fine touch' using different whetstone when wheel rotates and only in one working direction.
The result is exellent and barrel steel surface turns to mirrow with every other step after rusting

I bought the Brownell's wheel many years ago and it works great in a variable speed drill run at low/moderate rpm. I degreased it in a acetone bath when soaking a stock.

Thanks once again to all.

TH, if link below does not work, look up my old posts and go to the "short gun making video". I did not post the file, so it may not be on-line anymore.

I remember reading were the late Mr. Gaddy suggested that during the carding process if your using a wire wheel that the wheel speed should not exceed 500 rpm and 400 rpm was prefered.

Derick, it depends on wheel diameter, wire material and personal experience. It's clear do not use wheel at high speed.
