Hi gentlemen. I am seeking advise or information on a hammer drilling I recently saw at a shop. It's a 16x16x9.3/72. It has moderate engraving. It's complete and seems to function. Locks up tight and has decent finish/patina. The wood in intact but is a bit marked up with one chip. It does have a Monte Carlo style cheek pad. It has a under lever for the action and a top lever for the front trigger selector.

Ok. So the thing about this drilling that caught my eye is that when I picked it up I instantly knew it was the lightest one I have ever held. Under the 6 lb fox I usually carry. Indeed a hang scale verified it at 5.4 lbs the first go and 5.5 the second. This is one light drilling!

The proof marks were tough to read. The serial number is in the 700 range and it does not have the &sohns on the barrel. Only h Burgsmuller and the city/region.

Any information or thoughts as to things to inspect or relative value would be appreciated. Even more so any information on the maker would be great.

Here's some of Axel & I'm sure, Shotgun Charlie's notes:

He may have made it or possibly sourced components. If you want sporting weapon specific you'll need to post images.

1901 Advert

A few adverts. Seeing his firm was founded in 1876, the & Söhne may have been added near the turn of the 20th century

By 1912/1913 he is advertising as a supplier to a court, more than likely a non-reigning court(Prussian) and who knows what exactly he supplied. It was a dubbing that allowed him to taunt in advertising.

From a catalgoue reprint(Hermann Burgsmüller) it appears that the name Söhne was added in 1905. Quite a bit of info in the catalogue. Also there are several types of hammer drillings. Is it an underlever with a toplever Kugelsfellung; does it have a doll's head extension or not, or maybe a Greener crossbolt; what is the lock type; does it have a rear ocular or is there term Federleichi present?

Shanebevel,

I don't know what you know about the 9.3x72R but to me they are a can of worms, especially if you are not a reloader. Even if you are you will need to make a chamber cast and slug the bore to determine which variation of the cartridge that gun fires . In the Double Gun Journel, Munnell wrote an article explaining three variations of the cartridge, and yet there may be more.

I have only one drilling in 9.3x72R and when I slugged the bore the land diameter was only .358 at the muzzle. Also the rim thickness was too thin to close the breech on a modern RWS cartridge.

Some of the folks on this forum are very advanced reloaders and have no concern about unwraping the enigma of obsolete cartridges but I am not one of them so my other drillings are in less confusing chamberings.

Cheers,
Roger

Didn't Munnel mention 4? If I remember correctly the last was the Sauer cartridge of the same name and I don't remember if he covered it at all in the article. Good write-up.

We all have our quirks...especially me!!! I don't know how advanced I am but working with old and obsolete cartridges and making those rifles shoot I find to be great fun.

Roger,
You are missing out on a lot of fun, the idea is to get one of each(at least). One of mine is also .358 and I shoot .364 to .358 cast bullets, talk about adaptable.

Hey folks. Here are photos sent to me by my friend who is in the town where the shop is. I have since left that town and am back home in tulsa. Any thoughts? The proof marks are a bit tough to see. And the maker name seems to not really be engraved but something else. Not sure how to describe it. Maybe it's just not very deep.

Photos of the drilling

Anyhow. Would love to hear any thoughts on this gun.

Oh and to answer the other questions. It is a dollshead. And yes under and top lever. Under lever opens the gun. Top selects the rifle barrel. And 26" barrels.
