It is indeed a 10 ga. and it is chambered for 2 1/2" shells after having 2 different dealers look at it, will have a competent gunsmith look at it later. Overall condition they say is nice. I didn't notice before but the stock and foreend is checkered, just filled in with dirt and grease. Overall a nice piece and as stated before it locks up nice and tight.
thanks again Get some acetone and a toothbrush and that should take care of the embedded grease and dirt in the checkering. BTW: Beware of Cowboy Action Shooters as they've never seen a shotgun with over 18" barrels they liked! Jim

Book on Clabrough will be out next year. Most Clabrough's I have seen that are marked 11 in proof are 10 gauges. The 11 is the bore size not the chamber size. Flintfan is correct. I estimate the the gun to have been made in 1875 and after the 1875 proof mark was in effect "NOT FOR BALL". I have in my study ser. # 1907 and it has the 1875 "NOT FOR BALL" stamp. This gun was ordered to be made without chokes. I would say it is a medium grade. most of their guns in this early period are: medium grade,are side lever opening, most have a wedge fore-arm fastener, a screw-in hex. nut firing pin, one locking slot under barrels and a steel butt plate. Ser. # 1907 also has the San Francisco address. Most have LONDON in the address. Perhaps these guns were sold through the S.F. store?

I thought the "not for ball" British stamp, indicating choke was used only up through 1887?...Geo
P.S.: Oh, I see that 1907 is your serial number, not the date of manufacture. Anyhow the 'not for ball' message just means the barrels are choked to some extent.

the proof marks on this piece are 1855-1868. ~The "Not for Ball" marks came in 1875 -1887 so that is a bit confusing.
According to my Clabrough& Johnstone catalogue they were established 1865 so should any gun with the Clabrough Bros name date earlier than that ?

This piece is totaly engraved even the slide bar that holds the forend on, down to trigger guard, side plates, tang, hammers, and has demascus barrels, the forend and stock are checkered but worn. It is interesting finding out about this piece even though I have no desire to keep it, I will try to find a good home for it.

Cade, I would recommend that you learn a bit more about the gun before you post it for sale. Getting it thoroughly inspected by a gun double gunsmith is wise (especially the bores). Then give it a good cleaning. After this get a few appraisals before you sell - just my recommendation, but you'll get a better idea of its real value - and you may fall in love with the gun  It's a nice looking gun. I'd recommend listing on this site - of course everyone here will want to know that it's shootable and will follow your progress in learning about it and getting it checked out, but that can be fun as well.
