name change from Purdey to Purdey & Sons?

Somewhere near retirement or death of James Purdey Jr?

Somehow I can't google up the answer to this seemingly simple question.

The deed of agreement between James the younger(who ran the firm from 1858, son of James the founder) and his sons, James (also called James the younger on the family tree?) and Athol, which resulted in the change of name to Purdey and sons, was signed on the 21st Dec 1877 (from, Purdey's the guns and the family. By Richard Beaumont.) a fascinating insight into the history of the famous firm.

So as orry rightly says above, 1878, presumably after the Christmas break.
I doubt the information in the book is incorrect but i found the James the younger part confusing. It would appear that the father of James and Athol was around until 1909.
I'm sure the book is easier to understand than my ramblings though.

Thanks again. So the move seems connected with James III and Athol gaining a significant part in rether than James Jr withdrawing from the business?

As far as I can see, Athol was just 19 and his brother James was 23 when the deed was signed. It appears that James died in 1890, aged only 36. I'll have another look through the book and see what I can work out. I'm still feeling last nights new year beer today so I'll have a look tomorrow and get back to you then.
I'm not sure if it's the done thing to post a photo from the book, would that breech copyright laws ?

I don't think so - you aren't pursuing any commercial puproses, and you aren't doing the whole book. But honestly, that would be too much trouble for you, all I wanted to knowe was the year smile
