A few weeks back I bought a 40XBR off the net from a guy at the other end of the country. He did mention in the add that it did very occasionally not cock the action on closing the bolt. It was a good deal for the money I thought so I bought it.
Well this occasionally turns out to be more than occasionally.
Took it over to my local gunsmith who said its probably just old oil and gunk in the trigger mechanism and promptly sprayed it with some magic cleaning agent and used compressed air on it and it worked just fine.
Took it to the range today and still playing up on the firing point, yet when I got it home not once did it not cock on closing the bolt, tried it with a fired case thinking that might have a bearing on it but again it cocked on closing the bolt.
Now why should this be ?
Just tried it again before writing this and it cocks every time.
Anybody got any suggestions.
Regards, Roly.

There has been a lot of controversy about the "Remington-Walker" trigger. This is one of the best discussions of it:

Sounds to me like someone worked over the trigger. Get it adjusted by someone competent or put in a jewell or a Timney.

Those are very good triggers and in all likleyhood do not need to be relaced. Whena Remington exhibited this problem I always found the sear engagement to be adjusted incorrectly. Take it to someone who knows how to adjust it and I'll bet you a cup of coffee (cheap coffee) the problem disappears.

I have found some Remington 700 triggers that had the same symptom and found the cause to be that "bubba" had sprayed them with WD40. WD40 is not a lubricant and when liberally applied to parts and left over a period of time it becomes very sticky.

Correct want your trigger run dry. If it's oily attracts dirt and makes it's pull inconsistent. Squirt it with lighter fluid then air hose clean and dry.

700's have great factory triggers if adjusted by someone who knows what he is doing.

Thanks every body for your replies.
My rifle is a single shot without a safety.
I had a look at that website and most of it appears to be about how unsafe Remington triggers can be in regards to the safety, the trigger on this rifle looks to be untouched with factory sealant on the screws.
The trigger is very good if only it would cock each and every time.
Just strange it will cock at home every time but on the range with a live round it occasionally will not.
I don't have access to compressed air at home but will that matter if I give it a good swamp out with lighter fuel ?
