'Custom made' is a gun modified by the gunmaker to meet an individual customer's requirements. It could be a true one-of-a-kind, or it could be a fairly standard action taken off the maker's shelf and modified with non-standard wood, stock dimensions, engraving, checkering, gold plating, etc. I think the key is that the gun maker made the modifications, at the customer's request, thus "custom made" before it left the gunmaker's shop. If an aftermarket gunsmith added the exact same modifications, the gun would be "customized" but not "custom made." But hell, anyone can call a gun anything - it's up to the buyer to figure it out.

Trout1, I make both and "from stratch" only I started this post not because my hobby is call making, but because most of the callmakers as I can see confusing Custom and Handmade meanings IMHO. And I guess it's shame do not know your own language

"And I guess it's shame do not know your own language" Geno, Doesn't surprise me a bit, I've met a couple American waterfowlers that don't speak english. On Long Island I was accompanied by a translator that spoke both english and Great South Bay. In Alabama I had to use sign language.

Geno, I'm glad to hear you also make duck calls. I'm interested in purchasing a duck call from you. Please email me at kdhowes@hotmail.com and we can discuss. Thanks
I don't think the PM feature works here.

I agree with Jack Maloney's definition. However, "custom made" often means darn little beyond advertising BS, whether it's a gun or a sofa. "Hand-made" or "totally made by hand" is almost never true, in the gun world.

I'd be more concerned with custom "tuned" in regards to a call.

I have to agree with Jack and Jim. It reminds me of years ago when I got into an argument about building my home. I didn't do the actual building, but I did make up the blueprints and had the house built and finished to my specifications. Therefore it was CUSTOM-MADE. The person arguing with me said that since he had moved into a subdivision that had every third house on the street the same and was built six months before he even saw it, that his was custom built, too. Uh, OK. If you say so...... When you ordered a Model 21 and it was built to your specs, it had "Custom made by Winchester for......" engraved right on the barrels. It was made to their specs. That was right after they had Custom Built, etc. Getting a gun from the factory and having a gunsmith shave off the cheekpiece is like calling "This Old House".

And I guess it's shame do not know your own language Geno, The words "custom made" and "handmade" are used by craftsman very widely to emphasize, accurately or not, that their products having some superior craftsmanship. BTW, the U.S. never established a national language officially. That's why many public services have to publish documents in various languages. The U.S. went most of the way toward a national language by requiring immigrants to learn english as a requirement to become naturalized citizens and other areas like pilot communications, etc..

Hamnd made is not custom made if it duplicates another of the same. I make pens on a lathe and have made several thousand pens. All have been hand made. No more than a dozen have been custom made. Even ordering a type of wood or a style that I make is not custom made. This is a combination not a design alteration.
The same has to be said for most of the British double guns. They were finished out of stock inventory most of the times so they were not custom made. Hand made in as much as fitting and finishing is always a hand job. But it is not like you could call up Boss and order them to make a gun out of a block of steel with only hand tools and hand labor.
Gun making has always been forced to be efficient or they would not be able to make a gun at a profit. So evey machine step that can be done that replaces a hand step is embraced by most of the makers. So even modern Bespoke guns are mostly machine made and have limited hand finishing. And to be fair modern CNC machines would have been embraced by all makers 100 or 150 years ago by every maker if they had been available. It is a bussiness not a labor of love or a religion.
