A year or so ago I acquired a prewar Merkel drilling with top tang safety and a "Swedish Switcher" barrel selector. I put it up for sale on Gunbroker and I received an inquiry from a gentleman who lives in Norway. Apparently he had acquired a vintage post-war Merkel catalog that featured pre-war order sheets of Merkel products. Somehow he noticed the resemblance of my gun to the vintage order sheet and inquired about the serial number. Indeed it is the same gun. He just sent me a better photocopy of the order sheet so I can now read the words, but I can't understand it. If anyone can translate as much as possible about the order sheet, I would be very grateful. Below is a link to the order sheet, one photo of the gun, and a link to the entire album on the gun. I believe that the gun was restocked left handed and restored to new condition by Paul Jaeger, late of Jenkintown, PA. http://s396.photobucket.com/user/Vol423/slideshow/Merkel%2016%209374R%20Drilling

I just attached a better copy of the order sheet. The gun was built in 1939. Apparently it was originally built with an English straight grip stock if the drawing is to be taken literally. I can understand a few words, such as "lauf", for barrel, but very few other of the handwritten text. Does it show what the gun cost, what it was regulated with, or any other pertinent detail?

OK, I'll try to translate it into modern English gun parlance (with my own comments): Left side: 1 Anson (= boxlock) Drilling 147 Barrel: Boehler steel 65cm sunken hollow rib like on Holland shotguns (cross section sketch) Caliber 16 - 16/70 (= 2 ľ"), 9.3x74R (16.8 and 16.3 may be the choke constrictions. Cannot decipher most of the stenciled notes, only read here "???? for altering the rib") System = action: Anson = boxlock with Greener crossbolt, with selector by means of a small lever // and alternating sear safety (when rifle barrel is selected the right shot barrel sear is blocked and vice versa) // safety slide on tang, single set front trigger, separate extractor (for rifle barrel), without cocking indicator pins Shaped with large fences like on a shotgun Master: ??? Weiss January 17, 1939 delivered: February 8 , 39 (actioner?) (stock dimensions, the original was indeed "English" type without pg and cheekpiece) (stocker:) R. Noeschel (ö and oe are interchangeable) Feb15, 39 - March1, 39 extra fine figured wood / additional price Right side: Consul Andresen December 24, 1938 (order date?) Scope: without Sights: folding peepsight , and a normal automatic folding sight too instead of scope mount Sighting: 4.0g special powder and H-jacket bullet with cutting edge and lead point ( this is the contemporary RWS load Nr. 124R with the 16.7g = 258 gr H-jacket at 2600 fps) Left barrel regulated with Brenneke slugs. Engraving: Arabesken = scrolls model IV (can not identify the name of the engraver) (in red:) action body annealed! Other: 100 cartridges we got from Nuernberg (RWS factory) to be included in shipment. Delivery date: VERY URGENT! March 1939 /March27, 39/ Weight: barrel 1.610 kg, stock 1.400 kg, foreend .140 kg, total 3.150 kg (no mention of costs)

Does it show what the gun cost, what it was regulated with, or any other pertinent detail? Yes, there are detailed informations of the ammunition and other interesting details. I will be back from the Austrian Mountains next week and have a look at this Card. (have only Smartphone at the moment...) Kind Regards, Gunwolf Well, Kuduae did the job just at the same moment.... :-)) No work for me ! Gunwolf

I think I would have liked the straight grip stock more than the long pistol grip stock on it now. I'm going to have to cut the stock in order to use it. What a shame!
