Gents,
I have a Browning Grade II BSS with the silver oval on the underside of the buttstock, on which the previous owner had his initials engraved. While I'm sure "RBL III" was a pleasant enough chap, I would like to have his initials removed from the oval, and mine put on. Can you fill in engraving and have it redone? Has anybody here dealt with this issue? If so, how did you handle it?
Your replies are appreciated.
Justin

Beat it flat with a hammer. Or appropriate punch. Give you a nice textured surface to engrave on.
Michael Dubner (hope I spelled that right) did some engraving for me and he somehow managed to remove the checkering from a top lever and carve in a totally cool scroll. No trace of the original border or checkering. You can reach him at the engravers' guild site.

The norm would be to have a new plate engraved & fitted, in this area anyway.

New plate is the only possibility. Not a difficult job.

Mr. Wood and 300846,
In re: a new plate, how are they typically held captive in the stock? Press fit...epoxy...??? And how do you get them out?
Any recommendations on who could fit a new plate? I'm purdy handy, but I'd hate to bugger-up a nice piece of wood.
Thanks, Justin

In days gone by the escutcheon had a little pin soldered on to the back and if you applied a soldering iron tip to the centre that would free it. You still had to get the plate out of its recess without damaging the wood. On a decent stock I would not attempt it, much easier to give the stock to a professional who will have the whole job done in no time.

Send it out. Good engraver may be able to rework your old disc or tell you who to replace it so he can engrave it.

Send it to Keith Kearcher in Bend, Oregon and get it done right. Here's his web site: http://members.toast.net/keithkearcher/
