Found an Arthur Hubalek rifle in a gunshop in the boonies! Amazing. Hubalek was my grandpa's cousin. Rifle is in the shop owners' private collection. Commented on the stock finish peeling, he said it went into the creek during Hurricane Irene. I refinished the stock, with something like 10 coats of tinted Tung oil. I was in Hubaleks shop when I was 14, and didn't know him from Adam, but I found a HM Pope marked barrel under his lathe, and thought that he must have been good. Arthur left my grandpa a 1932 Olds that had 8000 miles on it, and I tagged along with dad and grandpa when they went to Brooklyn to pick it up. Widow put a price of $175 on a Hubalek full dress Scheutzen, at the time, but dad sez, 32-40? Ahhh, they don't make ammo for that anymore. Bummer! Nice forum, here! Just stumbled on it.

Lanny, Welcome to the forum, any pictures you might have to share would be welcomed by all. I've owned a couple Hubalek rifles (one 32-40 and two .22's) and one scope (his scope looks like a Fecker) of his over the years, have nothing now. I always thought he was a fine workman and turned out some winning barrels. https://www.google.com/search?q=Arthur+H...600&bih=756

The rifle is still in the shop owners collection. It's a Win HiWall scheutzen 25 caliber wildcat, I think 25-35 improved. I read that he stole Harry Pope's secrets of rifling, and Harry never spoke to him again. I seem to recall, my family didn't think Arthur was a nice guy. I never thought I'd see another Hubalek rifle. PS:Did you ever find somebody to restore your rifle stocks?

Lanny:
If I recall correctly, there's a Hubalek collector who shows at the Forks of the Delaware Gun Shows in Allentown, PA. I have no idea who he is, but if you were interested, the Forks of the Delaware Historical Arms Society minght be able to put you in touch with him. They can be contacted at:
2060 Northampton St, Easton, PA 18042 (610) 438-9006
Hours: Daily, 9am - 1am
Hours: Mon - Fri, 6pm - 9pm; Sat, Sun, closed
Other than finding the address, I know nothing about the organization beyond the fact that they sponsor 3 pretty nice gun shows a year in Allentown.

The only Hubalek collector I know today is Gary Quinlan 215-766-3403.
"PS:Did you ever find somebody to restore your rifle stocks?" Refresh my memory?

You sent me some photos of rifle stocks that had patches, and repairs that were totally invisible. You needed more contacts who could do this quality work, and I chickened out. Still practising, though....sold you a 1930s Lyman 48 back then.
