For those that have shot side by sides with ventilated ribs - what do you think of them? I looked at a 16 gauge Model 21 today that I really liked in all respects except for the vent rib. It's a CSMC made gun in unused condition for a decent price (in my opinion). All of my side by sides (including an older Model 21 12 gauge) have flat (file) ribs. I don't know that I dislike the vent rib - but it's not something I'm used to and don't really love the looks of it. This gun would be for upland hunting mostly - maybe the occasional clay target.

Probably a stupid question - but I'm assuming the ribs on a barrel can't be changed without major effort correct? Obviously it would be nice to shoot the gun for a little while before I made a decision but that's not possible in this case.

Factory vent rib Model 21s are made on a higher frame. So the rib really can not be removed. I really enjoy my vent rib Model 21, however it did shoot quite low from point of aim when I received it. CCMC did adjust this for me.

Who looks at the rib while shooting?
I look at the bird/clay
So it only comes down to your emotions.

If you want the gun, buy it
If you don't want the gun --- Well you get the picture smile

A vent rib is ok on a 12 ga. target-oriented Model 21 sxs, but not so good on a 16 or 20 field version. A 16 ga. is a field gun, and I wouldn't want one with a vent rib.

For a field gun, it's an accident waiting to happen. They're innately more fragile than a solid rib. Lose your footing or swing into a branch, and instead of a superficial character ding you'll have a kinked rib. I had vent rib on a Franchi OU that I used for everything back in the 70s. I was young and stupid and spent a lot of time in boats. By the time I sold that poor gun the rib looked like the grade profile of the ALCAN highway between Wjitehorse and Haines Junction. Older wiser folk will surely do better, but the odds are not good.

I don't think you'll ever notice the difference...unless you bend it.

Hasn't been the ALCAN for quite a while. The name is offically The Alaska Highway.

Methinks this being the reason -- Rerouting continues, expected to continue in the Yukon through 2009, with the Haines Junction-Beaver Creek section covered by the Canada-U.S. Shakwak Agreement. The new Donjek River bridge was opened 26 September 2007, replacing a 1952 bridge. Under Shakwak, U.S. federal highway money is spent for work done by Canadian contractors who win tenders issued by the Yukon government.

IMHO a Model 21 is about the only SxS that actually looks good with a ventilated rib. On the Winchester made Model 21's a ventilated rib brings a significant premium as compared to matted, particularly with regard to the small bores, including the 16 gauge.

Not sure I agree with this. Consider the number of hunters with OU's with vent ribs and I don't understand the fragile part. I have a Savage B in 20 ga with a vent rib and I think it is quite unique in its look. I use it for ducks and upland with no issue to the rib. I also have a Browning OU that has been heavily used it a lay down blind for over 10 years. Nary an issue with the rib.

About 30 years ago, I bought a new Winchester Model 23 with 12 gauge VR barrels and "early" screw-in chokes. I've enjoyed it ever since. Its been a great hunting shotgun.
