Just got this project finished today. I bought the rifle in a cheap rack at a local gun shop for $400 labeled "no bolt, as is". Seeing the quality I purchased it right when the owner was walking in. He mentioned he had the broken bolt in the trash. Seems that some of the front bolt face had cracked so he tossed the whole assembly in the trash. I was a bit shocked he could be so dumb since it seemed like an easy fix.

I had the broken bolt sent off along with another bolt body for the handles to be switched since it still has a hollow G33/40 bolt.

I then had a local smith do the final fitting of the bolt and headspacing. I ordered a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8 along with some S&K rings and bases. Those came a little off and had to be fitted.

I think it all came together nicely and I'd love to know who put the whole rifle together before me.

If I understand you correctly, this rifle, minus the scope and mount and without a bolt, was for sale for $400 at a local gun shop. As a public service you should post the name and address of this shop, to allow others the benefit of such monumental ineptitude.

I don't understand your comment on salvaging the G33/40 hollow bolt knob, since the bolt handle portrayed is obviously nothing of the kind.

Yep, the rifle was $400. Scope, mounts, and rings $580. The gun smithing came to $180. So I'm not into it for very much.

The dealer I got it from should know better. I have no idea what he's doing half the time.

The bottom of the bolt doesn't show up well in the above pictures. Here is one of the underside of the bold knob.

A very, very nice rifle!

I imagine you have Googled, but if that says Mark Moon, did you see this one?

I purchased a custom rifle online last week that was described as a VZ-33.

The pictures were inadequate to determine if it truly is a VZ-33 but the price was low enough to take the chance.

Lovely G33/40, you did very well.

What's it chambered for?

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

In the one picture, it looks like it is marked "8x57"

Vagabond,

1) Is the scope level? It sure looks higher over the rear bridge?

2) Do you have any pics of the action before you mounted the scope? I am curious to see where the screw holes are for the front scope base.

Beautiful rifle.

I believe the scope is level. The gunsmith who modified the bases said he bore sighted it. I haven't had a chance to shoot it or even handle it too much. I got it back the evening before I flew out for work. I do oilfield work so I'm gone weeks at a time. When I get back I'll try and determine if it's level. If not then I should be able to machine it down a bit.

The rifle is in 8x57. Thanks for the link to the other rifle. I tried looking up similar guns when I first got it last year with no luck.

Here is a picture of the receiver ring before the bases went on.

This showed up today.

VZ-33 and like yours, the bolt handle is the bent original with the hollow.
