Purchased a no inspection double off of one of the Internet auctions. Not hurt too bad on money, but the gamble has turned interesting to say the least.
Barrels had a nasty thud sound, so I started digging around with a feeler gauge and found some space at the muzzle. More digging and I start to remove black silicon, yes the high temperature stuff intended for a car engine. LOL.
More digging and such and well...I've got the entire bottom rib removed. Some idiot reattached the bottom rib, (and not yet sure about the top)?) by filling the gap with black silicone sealant. What will dissolve this stuff without damaging the blue? What a mess, but at least I've got a project.

You play with doubles enough you see these things. Strip, bead blast, re-lay, reblue.....no fun and not cheap.

Berryman's Carb and Throttle Body cleaner will strip the silicone off cleanly with ease.... and without damaging the rust blue or anything made of steel or alloy metal/solder etc.
Then send it to Mike Bonehill in Indiana to have the rib relayed....quality work and usually about $100.00 bucks or so....317-373-0599.....

I'll give it a shot. Whoever did it made sure to use enough to fill every gap. The stuff is also down in the narrow part near the muzzle, so I definitely need a good solvent.

Spray it on and let it sit for a bit, then come back and hit it hard again after it softens.... BTW - Berryman's brand only, the other cheapie carb cleaners are useless and lack the proper chemicals.
O'Rielly's Auto Parts sells the 20 oz. Berryman's B-12 spray can for about $4.85, you'll need a couple at least.

Saw a set of barrels last weekend which had been repaired with JB Weld. Must have used the whole tube. But it did work and must have been done decades ago.

The Berryman did the job, sorta. I've soon able to identify that both ribs were attached with the stuff. So now I've got the top rib off down to the block, too. Still some cleanup left, a good bit actually. Good news is that now the barrels sound much better when thumped with my finger.
I have read in a lot of places about people reattaching loose ribs with the loctite 380 that Brownells sells. I haven't read a thread yet where someone said the repair had come loose. I know that soldering is the old school, probably preferred method. Has anyone used the loctite for an entire rib? Did the barrels ring after the repair, or did the loctite deaden them like the silicone had in the previous repair.
I've got a call in to Mike in Indiana. Will also talk to him about what he does, and charges for his services.
