Calebg/Gunflint: Saw my first 31L at the Denver Collector's show last weekend. A plain 16 with a full choke that seemed to be in pretty good shape. The price was a bit steep, but I've got the fella's card. What I was really interested in was how the post-1941 trigger configuration would feel in my hands and how well it balenced. Both seemed good, not the "eureka" moment I was hoping for, but not bad. Further research seems justified.

You might be interested in this thread about my 31L: http://www.16ga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14752

The short story is that I've come to really enjoy it.

The 16 gauge 31L is an awesome gun that can still be had for short money.

Calebg: I don't know how I missed that particular "episode", but thank you for that. I've essentially already done this with a 1920 M12 16, straight grip and all. I've got very little money in that one and would consider doing it again with a 31L, if (a big "if") I can get one for the right price. Always the tough part.

On the horns of a dilemma here. Found two M31s in 16, one is a pre-war Deluxe and the other is an unmarked 31L (the receiver is unquestionably aluminum). The Deluxe is prettier, the 31L is more than a pound lighter. What to do (no, I can't justify getting both).

Lloyd, the 31L in 16ga is a nice gun. I have one and the pound difference in weight is significant. The 31L will have the trigger guard which extends back into the stock and will "hold better"...Geo

Were any of the aluminum-receivered guns marked as such? This gun only had the model number. The anodised aluminum was unmistakable and the weight confirmed it for me.

All of the guns marked "31L" have the aeromat (alloy) receiver.

Some of the early aeromat guns lacked the "L" designation, but the weight and finish should give them away.

Lloyd, my vote is for an M-37. I use a 16 on grouse, made in 1946.
