I've written about my Dad's First Bird dog here.

Me? I never miss. This new breed of quail can fly with their hearts shot out!

We just obtained our first American Water Spaniel. We have two English Setters (which is what I grew up with) for upland birds. Just wondering if this flushing dog could be used on grouse or woodcock? Any thoughts? George

George:

I am no expert on Water Spaniels, but my hunting partner uses a Lab for grouse and woodcock. He does ok with the Lab, but we generally get more birds over my setter and shorthairs.

As long as you can keep the dog in gun range I would think you could use the spaniel on grouse and woodcock.

Devrep: Nice looking pointers and a nice honor in the one picture. Good looking shotgun from what little of it I can see.

thanks Mike. Its a 32" GH 12ga with tight and tighter chokes, which is not quite an upland gun but I guess that he used the gun he had. I never got to talk to him about it and my dad's memory isn't good any more.
