Clearly, only if the lock work is actually mounted on the lock plate is it a 'sidelock'. Thankyou for putting this crying baby down, DH. I see nothing particularly wrong with the formulation "false sideplate"; false in this useage suggesting intention to deceive as in "False-hearted Lover". LG, you're hard on brand-name enthusiasts and ecclectics alike. Lefever is heating up a bit; I like them and will until I can't afford to be in the presence of a DS without dressing for the occasion. I also like Charlins and there's no massbuzz (to the degree you can produce same in regard to a doublegun) there. A long gun is like a short driveway; you can't ride em to heaven. jack

Undoubtedly correct, Pipes, but we called them simply 45 Colt and 45 Automatic for years and that seemed to adequately describe them.
As far as 'False Sideplates', I didn't coin the term, nor come up with 'Semi-Sidelock'. I didn't spread the manure, I just pointed it out so someone didn't step in it.

Lowell; As a Lefever fan, I think I can say that most of us are very well aware the Lefever is not a sidelock, no problem there. What it is, is a very "Unique" gun which combines most of the "Best" features of both box & side locks, while retaining very few of the Disadvantages of either. So There!!

So, if I understand correctly, a sidelock is a sidelock - unless it's not,
and a false sidelock nonetheless has genuine sideplates,
but surely the Beretta X-Tra Lock tank-dipped decal sideplates are, in fact, false sideplates(?)

Not as simple as choosing up sides, Lowell. Women are from Venus; men from Purdy's. I've always said buy the name not the gun. That's why I have Lefever "Automatic Hammerless", Charlin "L'Automatique", Browning "Auto 5". There's a difference?

I WAS going to post a photograph of a semi-sidelock so that everyone here could advance their understanding of double variations...but shotgunjones, randall, and jim legg obviously know more about this subject than anyone else here at the DG BBS...unless they too are just windbags...so perhaps anyone of these three can show all of us just what a sidelock thats not a sidelock is...if they can't or wont, I think it clearly exposes them for the egotistical windbags that they truely are...I'm calling your bluff...lets show everyone what you've got...

Robert, step-up to the plate and show us YOUR pictures eh? This is about the second, or third time now, that you've not made good on YOUR end. "Show everyone what you've got."

Thanks Lowell...but supposing these guys are experts... I have to give them some time to prove it incase I'm the one that has to eat crow...if you could drop me an email labeled Braekers to robertchambers@adelphia.net I'll send you the photos immediately...or to anyone else who can't wait for these cowboys to show their cards...If you don't agree that this shotgun is a whole new breed of cat, possibly never before seen at this website, then you can post the images and pass the crow for me to eat...I've read alot of your posts over the years and I've noticed that you are always kind, even to young new members with the same repeated question...you have long earned my respect, I just never had the opportunity to say so...These guys need to oppologize to OWD for "jamming" his post to the point where he is probably sorry he asked...I know no other way of dealing with members who have effectively figured out a way to circumvent the rules of netiquette by littering the post with so much happy horse $#it that it shortcircuits the whole posting...they could have private messaged me or OWD with their rediculous concerns, but instead they needed to have a pillow fight on OWD's brilliant posting...
