I'm looking at a side-by-side on the Internet for sale. Haven't seen the proof marks yet, however, the barrel rib is inscribed "Acier Compound." Can I assume this inscription is French. The shotgun (boxlock) appears to be circa 1900, no external hammers, with blued steel barrels. No idea of the gunmaker - yet.
Thanks,
MikeF

I have a Belgium o/u with barrels marked Acier, which is the steel used in making them. Further than that, I have no clue.

Actually Acier is french for steel I think. Most of the time the barrel marking will have another word in combination with Acier. A high grade Belgian gun I have has Acier Universal on the top of the barrels, but Cockerill Steel under the forend?
I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

j-I, "Cockreill" was the brand and "Universal" the grade or trade name of the particular alloy.

HF - if the "Compound" was actually "Comprine," then you have "fluid compressed steel."
