What is the def. of a proof mark or rather I should say mark that looks like the letter 'Y' with a small 5-point star directly above it?

On this particular double that mark is located between the squiggle for voluntary preliminary proof of unfinished bbl.'s and the Lion over PV. It is found on both the bbl's. and the action flat in that same order.

Any help forthcoming appreciated. I'm not finding that particular mark in my ref material. The 'Y' is a capital letter 'Y' with longish horizontal flats on the arms and base of the letter, so that it nearly resembles a martini glass w/a short stem. The 5-pointed star is unremarkable & less wide than the 'Y'.

A capital letter with a star over it is an inspector's mark

The star replaced a crown in 1877

Just a guess

A picture would help

An example at the bottom. One cannot use inspector's marks to reliably date a pre-1924 gun (which will have the gauge in a diamond with or without 'C' for choke).

I'm sure that is correct about it being an inspector's mark. I'd simply gone brain dead not seeing/finding that exact mark in my ref materials and had forgotten about the inspector's using secret code letters to signify their identity. Thanks gents!

Any idea of the exact time frame that particular inspector's mark was in use?

Thank you, Oskar! I used to have a number of good information sites bookmarked, but lost all of it with an unfortunate 'puter situation and the back up copy wasn't usable either. Shame on me for not having been more thorough and having the back up backed up. Anyway, that information is what I wished, gun was made between '59~'68. Perfect. And in line w/my thoughts about its time of mfg.
