I had a double rifle action color hardened by Turnbull about 8 years ago. The colors were OK then, but over the years they have turned very dark. It almost looks like the action was blued. Could it be that the varnish they used to cover the action has turned dark? The rifle does not sit out, but is kept in a wooden gun cabinet that does not allow sunlight in.

LD1, you have most likely diagnose this problem correctly. As far as I know (after having consulted people far more learned than me) case color is not photosensitive. I'd suggest a call to Turnbull. If that doesn't go somewhere satisfactory, strip the action of the coating and go again with a clear coating; Dr. Gaddy recommended Behlens as I recall.

Most varnish and polymerizing oil coatings will yellow and darken over time. Completely normal and expected. The Behlen's that Dr.Gaddy used and recommended is a nitro cellulose lacquer and generally does not darken with age. It is also easily removeable with lacquer thinner or acetone for recoating. Varnish is not so easy to remove. I'd call Turnbull and ask what they used in those days.
FWIW, I have an LC Smith that Turnbull recolored very early on in his career, and the colors do not seem to have changed in the 15 or so years that I have owned that gun. But, it does not look like it was coated with anything.

Agreed - I have a Fox done soon after he set up the shop on Route 20, never varnished - still looks great
