I was given this thing and have no idea what it is. its iron with some sort of gold plating . Its about the size of a door knocker but has no Knocker handle. The bottom part has a net looking portion with two little pockets. Any help would be appreciated. t hanks Al

Looks like a wall pocket. You hang them up and put whatever in them. Matches, flowers, whatever. Never saw one like that though.

Like this?? Match stick holder http://www.ebay.com/itm/SOLID-BRASS-HUNT...=item23317f8020http://www.ebay.com/itm/Early-1876-Pat-C...=item5d491778bfA great vintage cast iron match safe holder featuring a game bird and rabbit hunting scene. Has a gold wash finish. In overall good used conditon with no apparent damage, some finish wear overall. Measures about 8-1/2 inches tall overall. Bears a date of what looks to be 1876, possibly 1870, not sure, probably a patent date.

It is a match holder for wooden matches. Some are true antique but they are likely being reproduced. We have one bearing an 1870 patent date.

I believe the double compartment was designed to place the old time wooden(strike anywhere)matches in one side and after using it to place it head down in the other side. They were common in the bathrooms as to eliminate odors. He He Pilgrim
