I have the stock off of a 12ga, and don't think I've lost anything. What is the function of the small little spring that sits beneath the floor plate screw, which I think is the trip spring? I want to understand its function before I put this thing back together - does it need to be seated in a certain way, or will the floor plate screw take care of that work for me?

It pushes the top lever trip into place keeping the lever open until the rib extension pushes it clear upon the barrels closing. The Fox uses this system where as the typical A&D Purdey double under bite system relies on the locking bolt contacting the rear portion of the front under lug to keep the top lever open. As long as the trip is in its proper orientation the bottom plate screw will take care of everything for you.

Thank you for the clear explanation. Doesn't sound like it needs to seated any certain way. Simply held in place by the screw on the floorplate, correct?

The spring sets into the hollow bottom of the trip. Which means it sits down in the hole quite a way. If it is closer to the top of the hole, then it is caught on the edge of the trip.
