I've never shot or even handled a Winchester Model 23. What do you all think of them? I've got an opportunity to buy a Model 23 Classic, 28 ga, 26" barrels, ic/mod. What's a decent price to pay for one in excellent condition? Thanks very much.

Heavy.
"Classic" or "Golden Quail"?
$4-5000.
Did I say heavy?

It's a Classic. Heavy doesn't bother me too much, as it will primarily be used to shoot doves.

Decent sturdy gun, lousy cat on a screen door trigger. Not sure what they bring now. Bob's estimate sounds right.

The trigger is not good. The Classic 28 Gauge is a little better on weight because it is an actual scaled frame. The only 23 28 Gauge on a scaled "baby" frame. If you are patient you should be able to buy one for 4k but 4.5k is pretty standard.

Why would anybody pay $4K-5k for a gun that is known to have a crappy trigger? Doesn't make any sense. I can pay $500 and get that.

After handling them at the NRA convention I liked the handling of the baby Model 23 Classics so much that I got them both during 1986. They must fit me pretty well as I do quite good with them at skeet, even though the .410-bore is choked Modified and full, and the 28-gauge holds the distinction of being the only 28-gauge gun I ever ran a 100 straight with. They are much better if they are the first guns I shoot on a given day. If I shoot something with nice crisp trigger pulls first, the Model 23's spongy trigger is pretty noticeable!!

I had a couple, they were nicely made guns. But, when I decided to go all Parker I sold them. One was a Grand Canadian. Both 20's.

I'm going to echo most of what Sarge said. I too have a .410 Classic. I'm not a .410 fan, but that aside, it is a well finished, solid gun. At the outset I had some issues with the trigger, but I got the mechanism good and clean and it has worked fine since - no issues with the trigger. Mine weighs 6.25# which might be a little heavy for a .410, but it's a nice feel and the whole is well balanced. If I needed a 28 ga. I wouldn't hesitate at its price point (approx. $4500). If I had a bit more cash Id be looking for a Parker Repro.
