I would like to make the finish on my Beretta 686 more of a satin finish. It has a high gloss finish currently. Just too shiny for my liking and it's my current waterfowl gun so I would like a little less glare. Any products or process recommended ? I've looked at the products Brownells sells Rottenstone etc. just wanted experienced info. Thanks.

Try Birchwood Casey stock sheen and conditioner or rottenstone on a wet pad. Both of these are lower abrasive options that would be a good place to start.

Thanks. The gun in question came from Rochester.

600, then 800 grit wet or dry lubricated with oil of choice. Go slow and be thorough. If you see any shiny areas when finished, start over.

I have used 0000 steel wood effectively, but adding a little rottenstone would be a good idea.

I may use OOOO steel wool. I did a Remington 700 stock with their shiny lacquer finish that way a few years back and it came out good. But I just don't want to mess up the Beretta.

0000 Steel Wool. Over the years I have tried just about everything recommended here and, to my mind, none do a better job than fine steel wool. I have knocked down some very high gloss finishes to a very subtle dull glow; almost like a rubbed oil finish.

I have never had a problem with steel wool residue remaining in the finish as often mentioned in various forums as a deterrent.

I pretty much use the steel wool dry, but occasionally use a little lubricant as well.

Always wipe the stock with a dry rag after you rub it.
