I used Eley VIP 21 gram (3/4 ounce) number 7 shot for pheasants last season and was most impressed. Going to give them a further trial this season too. One ounce loads may suffer pellet deformation in such a small bore a bit like the 3 inch .410. All I can say is try them and see but a sub 6 pound gun will be unpleasant to shoot. Lagopus.....

Cactus Jack thought they were great in his 28-gauge Eusabio Arrizaga. These have been sitting around my gun room for a couple of decades -- I did shoot a few Pheasants with these when I first received my RBL-28.

Did you ever wonder how many million boxes of 28ga you could sell for $4.75/box? HAHAHAHA You know, like what they're REALLY worth in terms of production costs?

I sometimes hunt with a married couple in Montana. She shoots 1oz of 7-1/2s through her little Merkel SxS. Her Merkel 28 is of post-war manufacture and made in West Germany.
I've seen her take huns, sharptails, and roosters with that combination of gun and shell many times. All taken over pointing dogs. Overa pointing dog, 22 with birdshot would be adequate for ostrich.

Used 1oz 28 ga.on pheasants last year. Killed 'em stone dead. I will use the same load to hunt ruffs this Saturday. I'm expecting the same results.

I don't know why anyone would want to hunt upland birds with anything but a "pointing dog". I'll leave the .22RF rat shot to those that are better shots than me & my dogs don't ever point ostrich anyway.

Thanks guys for the feed back, I am still wary,I have always shot 3/4 oz out of my AYA #2 an.d my Rizzine. I don,t want to bulge a barrel. I feel a 1 oz load is for 16 or light 12 load. Going through another box I found 2 boxes of Winchester AA paper shells (pretty neat) in 28 gauge.

Od Hercules/Alliant handloaders guides used to state how long a column 1 oz of shot would be in the various gauges. Neither shot size nor alloy was stated. Presumably this would have been ordinary "Chilled" shot of a size suitable for clay targets. Non shot cup wads would be used to obtain these lengths which are based on a volume of .288 CuIn per ounce. 10ga = .610" 12ga = .690" 16ga = .837" 20ga = .970" 28ga = 1.212" .410 = 2.181" Larger or harder as well as shot cups will of course result in a slight lengthening of the column in the bore. Does this result in a longer shot column in the air, don't know, has been debated for years. When firing the same load from different bore diameters though this length to diameter ratio is why the smaller bores require a slower burning powder to keep pressures from going out the top. 1oz in a 12ga is quite nicely handled with Red Dot, but don't try it in a 28 with an oz of shot. To attain similar velocities the smaller bores will normally require heavier charges of the slower powder than will the larger bore using a fast powder.

I don't know why anyone would want to hunt upland birds with anything but a "pointing dog". Some people consider it unsporting unless one is using a net for catch and release. Some like to decoy birds to the gun, some like a pointing dog to pin them down, some like to ground-swat them or shoot them off a limb..... and some like the thrill and sport of a surprise flush.
