Walter, the dogs in this most recent post of yours look different that the other signed Loy ones with the shorter snout.
These dogs are well executed works. It is possible the others were different periods of his work or did I miss that those were not Loy's work?

I see now what you are talking about with the quotation like marks.

Looking past the dogs and looking at the scroll work, you can see a good resemblance in the two guns.

I can't help about the engraving, but I just love the expressions on the dogs' faces. Looks like they're saying:

#1 setter - "With my master holding a 10 gauge 3 1/2", the most powerful shotgun in the world, do you feel lucky, chicken? Do ya?"





#2 setter - "What? You don't wanna play with me? Really?"



#3 pointer - "Come on, birdie, why are you going away? Please!"


#4 pointer - "Uh-oh, looks like I've pointed a grizzly!"


#5 Setter - "Pointing birds is as futile as life in general - pathetic if he misses, sad if he doesn't..."


#6 Setter - "Are you aware that the quail season isn't open yet?"


#7 Setter - "Wow! He hit that snipe! I can't believe it! Must've been a stray pellet..."


#8 Pointers "Strange birds... I don't wanna retrieve them" - "Don't worry Don, with our master's shooting I bet you won't have to"

Were the short snout dogs on signed Loy guns?? If so I missed that point. Loy's signature is just below the right front paw of the setter. I will photo a close up as soon as I get a chance.

Walter, sorry after reading the whole post again, "Opinions on engravers...., the original poster stated he was not sure. I was going by what the poster had claimed were Loy engraved.

Mr Dumpty, funny, they sure do have some feeling to them.

Here's an early example:

Dennis Potter asked me if I would submit a couple of LC pictures for him. His question is "Anyone care to give an opinion on who the engraver was on this early LC Smith, It's in the 5XX range?".

I love looking at these. Good stuff, nice looking guns. Keep them coming.

This is a Ithaca Flues grade 3 20 ga. built in 1910. Not Loy.
It currently is wearing black "blue line" pad. What would be appropriate for a gun of this age?

American Silvers [called the Grieb also] was like a Silvers, but with an ochre line between the black base and rubber. An English Silver would be appropriate , too.

Ha! Ha! I think it's more like the dog is pointing out that buggered up screw!!
