Evening gentleman. I came across some vintage shells today. 12, 16, 20ga. All are full, some in plastic. A couple of Western SuperX Mk5 magnum 12ga 1.5oz loads and some others. I have not seen the Nimrods before. Anyone know about how old they may be?







And the Peters with the Mallard on the box, did folks actually use #9 shot, back in the day to shoot at waterfowl? Up close maybe, or was the Mallard simply the logo at the time?

1.25 ounces of 9s used to be a good long range dove load out of a Citori skeet gun. It was a veritable cloud of shot.

I bet the Super X 1.5oz load in 2 3/4 shell would knock out a few fillings.

Probably the 3 3/4dr eq. on the Peters would wake you up too.

What fun, I used these for dove hunting this year.

Using the term "9s" in the same sentence with "long range" seems contradictory to me. When I think of long range dove loads I think 7 1/2s, not 9s. I consider 9s a close range size, 20 yards or less, not long range. I use them for skeet loads, nothing else. They're okay for opening day doves, when over half are juveniles, and close, but I don't even use 9s then. My opinion only, based on a 56 year career of shooting them.

The mallard was just the Peters logo. The child warnings on the labels and plastic hulls puts them no older than 1960. If there are no zip codes in the addresses, you can narrow it to about '60-'64. I believe the Nimrods are Canadian, probably CIL Industries.

My long range dove load is 1 oz of sixes and a full choke. Used to work better than it does now. Something must have changed.

You are correct, the Nimrods are a CIL produce. I used many of them when I was starting my shotgun career in the late 60's.
