I recently bought a shot belt with marked I P Cutts patent, the leather was a bit tired so i worked some oil into it.

While doing so there was old shot that was trapped in the seams which came free, most of is was normal shot ranging from as small as number 9 and as big as BB.

What was odd was some thing that had obviously been used for shot that i did not recognize.

What i can only describe as 3.5mm lead beads with a hexagonal cross section and a small < 1mm hole through the center.

There were a handful of these all roughly the same shape. Had me wondering if this was some kind of early experimental shot type that is documented which seems unlikely as they don't appear very aerodynamic,

- or someones home made experiments - which i can believe a frustrated sportsman cutting up little bits of lead pipe or whatever it is.

Would like to know your thoughts, whatever it is i thought it was interesting.

Picture below, its only a phone picture and its difficult to take pictures of such a small item.

I remember the box was clearly marked not to be used for covey shooting, and subsequent pattern testing showed very irregular patterns at bird shooting range

Here's another interesting bit of dialog on shot:

https://books.google.com/books?id=9BNZAA...hot&f=false

What is interesting is in this case 'plumbago' as ref.'d is speaking of plain black lead being used as a 'polishing agent' for the round shot. However, what is most generally referred to as 'plumbago' in older sporting literature is speaking to the misshapen or deformed shot and sometimes to shot that has been purposely flattened.
