I have forgotten the name, and I've even spoken to him on the phone, of the gentleman who is talented enough to artfully use a variety of stains and paints to simulate the appearance of fine French or Turkish wood on much more plain stocks. Hopefully someone can remind me who that is and provide contact info....which I've also lost. Of course, I've slept since I last talked to him........lost in the fogs of age I guess. Apologies in advance.

I went to a presentation on automobile dash restoration and the presenter indicated that he used various printers inks to achieve a very realistic wood effect. He indicated that printers inks do not dry and one can place a coat on and if you don't like it remove it. After the first effect is achieved then the dash is lacquered and one can continue with additional inks to achieve the desired result always covering with lacquer following the "final" ink application.

I wonder if this technique is used to create more attractive wood?

Just be aware the figure enhancing is painted on top of the wood, not in it. So any significant scratches will cut through the paint and expose the underlying wood. Probably not a real concern for most of us though.

Mark is the man and he does very nice work. I talked to him about painting a 2 inch extension I had added to the butt stock of one of my guns. Painted and finished was around $1000. With the price of the extension $400 that was more than the economics of the gun could take.
