Custom .243 Krag Being unable to identify the maker, I let the other fellow buy it at this price. Does anybody recognize the workmanship?

That is a hard one to figure, I was watching that auction. Given the chambering, it is definitely post-war. The checkering looks pretty recent. But what puzzles me is, even though it is a Norwegian Krag, why would anyone chamber it for 243 Winchester. I have a Norwegian Krag in 6.5x55 and was advised that a steady diet of current factory loads wouldn't be good for the action.

I was going to buy it, but I felt obliged to save my ammunition for that Minar.

Just curious, what is the thinking about a .243 (.308 class) cartridge on a Krag action? Chuck

I wondered the same thing, and I had some trouble seeing the point of a large .243 with a huge target scope. I bought long ago a Peterlongo of Insbruck full-length rifle (stutzen) in .257 Roberts with a great big Fecker scope. It was the ideal thing for shooting chamois in the Alps, of course, but I don't actually hunt chamois, so the combination of a small cartridge and a large rifle with a long target scope made less and less sense to me, so I sold it. I have had a hankering for a nice custom Krag sporter for a long time, so I was very tempted by this one.

David, I had the same desire for a Krag sporter but never found one I liked. I finally scratched the itch. Steve Durren found a bubba krag and built me a beautiful little full stocked carbine. I probably should have used a mauser action but I like the Krag and why not?

There's a terrific article praising the Krag action, "A Rifle for the Poor Man," by Ned H. Roberts, from Outdoor Life 1917, reprinted in James Foral's "Gun Writers of Yesteryear." Roberts quotes Townie Whelen:
"With cartridges giving 40,000 pounds pressure and less I would rather have it (the Krag) than any action I know of. Indeed I have almost a reverence for this old-timer. It stands the racket of military service, the wilderness, and downright abuse, better than any rifle I know of."

I guess this answers the question, the max recommended chamber pressure for the 243 is 60,000 psi. I would imagine that most factory loads are greater than 40,000 psi.

Did anyone look at the photo of the muzzle of this rifle? The bore appears to be far larger than .243". I know that is how the barrel is marked, but I wonder if there is some discrepancy there. The Super Target Spot would not bring as much as a comparable Unertl, but it is still worth $500-$600. The stock is a work of art.

Is there any chance that this is a reshaped original stock?
