I saw a Model 21 Winchester that had been left on it's side in a soft case for years, it was rusted badly in a couple of spots on the side facing down. Of course that's an extreme example, but it made me leery of storing a gun on it's side for very long.

I've always stored mine muzzles up, but I do wonder about the recoil pads on some of the heavier guns. It hasn't happened to any of mine, but I can't say that I haven't seen more than a couple of guns with crushed pads.

Cases, particularly soft, are poison, Steve. A relative once stored a Winchester 30-30 in one of those fleece-lined cases. Rusted so badly he cut it out with sharp knife and scissors.

I think muzzle down is the way to go.

You shouldn't use so much oil that it leeches into the stock, but mistakes are made. You can miss something when cleaning. Ever see Kroil creep? I don't trust it.

There's really no downside I can see from going muzzle down. Muzzle up *should* be okay, but muzzle down WILL be okay, so why not?

I really prefer muzzle down for all the above reasons. But I also like the butt up so I can admire the stock and actions without having to pick them up.

The long guns I own that are not cased are stored butt down. Again is almost50 years of gun ownership I haven't has a single stock develop an "oil soaked" problem while in my care.
